Our memories define us, but they also entrap us, they are a siren song disguised as a distress call set to the tune of Madama Butterfly designed to lure our identity-ship back into the past and smash it against the rocks of the long-forgotten space station wreckage of who we used to be. Don’t get lost in the holographic fantasy-realm of your own history just because there's a hot lady with a nice singing voice there, sometimes the past is just decaying space-junk that needs to be taken out with the rest of the space-trash.

It's haunting and often terrifying, but it's also incredibly beautiful. Magnetic Rose is a must-see for every fan of anime, horror, and science-fiction.

Of course. Of course this was so good. Satoshi Kon wrote it and Yoko Kano made the music.
The combination of both these creative minds in a 90's sci fi short is a match made in anime heaven.
Loved seeing the decaying, rusted atmosphere accompanied by the beautiful opera singing. Kon's fingerprints are all over this.

There are only two masterpieces of space horror, this and Alien. And I think this has the edge up on Alien.

An excellent and much overlooked short film from the mind of Katsuhiro Otomo (Akira) and a screenplay from Satoshi Kon (Perfect Blue, Paprika).
So epic that it basically plays out like a feature condensed to a short; boasting that gorgeous 80s/90s space-anime aesthetic, a haunting and emersive score (Yoko Kanno of Cowboy Bebop) and creative direction. While I'd like to give Kon all the credit here, director Koji Morimoto weaves some wonderful trickery and his visual style is very pleasing to the eye; it's a shame that he seems to be one of those fellas where directing isn't their main game, as I'd love to see him tackle a feature-length. His name appears here and there on other projects, but…

First of three shorts for Memories.
Kanojo no omoide is an intriguing take on how we assimilate our life's memories, using a futuristic sci-fi space adventure.
What we store in our beings tends to move and impulse us to keep forward. But alas, it can be a double-edged sword if we let it hold us back.

Spellbinding is the only word I can think of to describe the amazing beauty and magic of this story. It takes place in the distant future, and the story starts with a group of space travelers responding to a distress call. Eventually they get wrapped up in a world of mystery inside of a strange ship and the sounds of a hidden being inside the ship causes chaos. It develops into a completely surreal visual story with the astronauts seemingly being pulled into a different world.
There's an indescribable feeling of majestic magic between the appearing and disappearing people and environments, the stunning 19th-century scenery, and perfectly animated scenes of space. It's so satisfying in its surrealism and I could sit down and rewatch it this moment and still enjoy every second. I love the art style, story, atmosphere, and everything else possible about it.
