Warborne: Above Ashes is an upcoming MMORPG that drops players into an ongoing war between six factions. Unlike traditional MMOs, it skips permanent character progression in favor of a cyclical system. Each battle feeds into a larger month-long conflict, creating a level playing field on a regular basis. This approach encourages strategic thinking and alliance-building among players and guilds alike.
Players step into the role of a Drift Master, a tactical commander leading from a top-down perspective. Instead of going solo, you control a squad of up to 40 individually recruited Drifters. These units can be customized with hundreds of gear combinations across 12 classes, including melee fighters, snipers, technicians and heavy support. This setup offers plenty of room for experimenting with different builds. Beyond combat, the game also features a diplomatic layer: factions can form temporary alliances, coordinate joint operations or even betray one another – a feature the developers not only allow but actively encourage.
Playtest starts on April 24 - with exclusive rewards
Warborne: Above Ashes is currently in development by Taiwanese studio Pumpkin Studios and is set to launch sometime in 2025. While an exact release date hasn’t been confirmed, it likely won’t be far off. A global playtest is scheduled to begin on April 24, aiming not only to fine-tune the game’s balance but also to grow its community. The developers shared the news in a YouTube video released on April 10:
Interested players can register here. The "Warband Pre-Assembly Event" is already live, allowing players to team up and form guilds ahead of launch. Those who join early will gain access to:
- Name protection for Warband & characters
- Exclusive beta cosmetics
- Eclipsium (in-game currency)
- Cash prizes of up to 5,000 US dollars for large warbands
During the actual test, further rewards await - special skins, emblems and secret customizations for players who reach certain milestones or are particularly active.

As a child in the 90s, my Gameboy was my steady companion. After school, the PlayStation was fired up. When I finally got my first PC, I was completely hooked. My passion for gaming has never waned since. For me, writing for Notebookcheck means reporting on topics that are really close to my heart - in addition to gaming, I also like to write about e-mobility, photovoltaics and innovative gadgets. When I'm not sitting at my computer, I'm probably on water rescue duty on the Baltic coast or trying to counteract the downsides of my geek life - namely sitting for long periods - at the local swimming pool.
